Turkish cup match: Bursaspor:2 Fenerbahçe: 3 |
Fenerbahçe maintained its unbeaten run in the Ziraat Turkish Cup, recovering from being 2-1 down with two goals in consecutive minutes to clinch a victory against Bursaspor in their group A encounter on Wednesday evening. During the match, played in the rain, defender Gökhan Gönül handed the Yellow Canaries a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Bursaspor responded with Chile striker Sebastian Pinto in the 59th. Gönül's own goal in the 70th minute turned the odds against Fenerbahçe, but the İstanbul side came back with two goals in the 79th and 80th minutes -- Bursaspor's Şener Özbayraklı brought the score to 2-2 with an own goal and Brazilian midfielder Christian Baroni added another to wrap up the game 3-2.
Bursaspor fans reacted negatively towards the administration of their team following the match, calling on the managers to resign. They criticized the management for selling Alfred N'Diaye to English Premier League side Sunderland.
Fenerbahçe continued its 10-match undefeated streak in the Turkish Cup. The team leads group A with nine points. Fenerbahçe and Bursaspor were the finalists of last year's competition, and the İstanbul side won the title for the first time in 29 years.
Fenerbahçe coach Aykut Kocaman was happy with his team's comeback for the victory. “It is promising that we reacted against being 2-1 and got back to turn the game around,” he said at a post-game press conference.
Kocaman said his team aims to guarantee a spot in the semifinals before the group games are concluded and therefore it was important to earn a victory against Bursaspor.
The hosts were disappointed to lose and fall down to third place in group A, but they are still ambitious. Speaking at the press conference, Bursaspor assistant coach Mutlu Topçu said their loss was not irreversible.
“In the final minutes, we conceded two goals due to a momentary loss of concentration. It's not over yet. We have three games to play. We are strong enough to win them all,” he added.
Elsewhere, second-division side 1461 Trabzon held Sivasspor to a 1-1 draw on home turf. Sivasspor took a 1-0 lead with an own-goal by a Trabzon player in the 54th minute and Trabzon equalized the deal in the 89th to win its first point in the group stage.
